A boater’s paradise -- five top ports

The Travel Channel has come up with five top boating destinations for the cruising crowd that the website says is sure to “reduce stress and improve quality of life.” We would have to agree with the choices, having visited four out of the five locations.

From Marina Del Rey, California to the historic Newport in Rhode Island, boaters can experience unique traveling throughout the summer. As always, the U.S. Coast Guard reminds mariners to use  caution, courtesy and common sense when boating during these busy months and check all safety and survival equipment before heading out to a destination.

Marina del Rey, otherwise known as “a waterfront playground” is always busy with people biking, shopping, and eating around the clock. There are tons of activities all day for every age. This high-end, luxury marina is home to many famous celebrities and boasts five-star restaurants and hotels. Beaches and parks are in very close proximity to this marina along with boat rentals and fishing.

 

2. Newport, Rhode Island

According to discover Newport, the region is known as the “sailing capital of the world” and hosts  international events such as America’s Cup and prestigious regattas. Along the coast is the legendary Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path overseeing the natural beauty and architectural history of the Gilded Age. The many beaches surrounding this coast provide great swimming. Boaters come from all over to see the magnificent mansions and taste the terrific seafood located right next to the harbor.

 3. Key West, Florida

 The Key West marina is a unique way to watch the sunset or sail through the Gulf of Mexico.  There endless things to do when visiting this beautiful island, and since it is small everything is easily accessible. The scenic beaches, the historic homes including Hemingway House, and top notch restaurants with low-key vibes provide for perfect excursions.   key west.jpg

 4. Lake Havasu, Arizona

Lake Havasu is home to shopping, sightseeing and friendly company. Lake Havasu city is centrally located along 60 continuous miles of lake and river waterways. The hidden coves and beaches are a perfect way to get some alone time and relax without any distractions. At Lake Havasu you can experience beautiful waterways surrounded by scenic desert. The lake is also known to draw spring breakers with its warm water temperatures and numerous party boat rental availability.

 5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale boasts 300 miles of waterways and is home to 40,000 resident yachts. Needless to say, it is a boat lover’s paradise. Known as the “Venice of America,” has many marinas from Pier 66 to the Bahia Mar Marina, all nearby top-notch restaurants, eclectic nightlife and some of the prettiest beaches around.
